The country is close to entirely isolated from the rest of the world maintaining only small contact with certain nations. Since the ceasefire of the Korean War, North Korea has become increasingly detached from the majority of the world; however what factors have led to this increased isolation? North Korea’s foreign policy was becoming increasingly reclusive in the late 20th century. Anders Lewis, a right-wing American historian and a heavy detractor towards much of Bill Cummings’ sympathetic work towards North Korea quoted Kim Jong Il in his essay, The Historian Who Defends North Korea as saying; â€Å"‘the imperialists’ aid is a noose of plunder and subjugation aimed at robbing ten and even a hundred things for one thing that is given†. It was clear that the North was still self-excluded and heavily isolated from much of the world; however between 1993 and 2001, the government of Bill Clinton made several important steps which improved North Korea’s foreign relations and reduced the countries increasing level of isolation. Korea had â€Å"suffered a fractured 20th century† and the Clinton government realized this and worked towards reconciling with the fragile and tense culture which had been created in the North. Huntingtons Disease Essay BackgroundHuntingtons disease is inherited as an autosomal dominant disease that givesrise to progressive, elective (localized) neural cell death associated withcholeric movements (uncontrollable movements of the arms, legs, and face) anddementia. It is one of the more common inherited brain disorders. About 25,000Americans have it and another 60,000 or so will carry the defective gene andwill develop the disorder as they age. Physical deterioration occurs over aperiod of 10 to 20 years, usually beginning in a persons 30s or 40s. The geneis dominant and thus does not skip generations. Having the gene means a 92percent chance of getting the disease. The disease is associated with increasesin the length of a CAG triplet repeat present in a gene called huntingtonlocated on chromosome 4. The classic signs of Huntington disease are progressivechorea, rigidity, and dementia, frequently associated with seizures. Studies ;Research Studies were done to determine if somatic mtDNA (mitochondria DNA)mutations might contribute to the neurodegeneration observed in Huntingtonsdisease. Part of the research was to analyze cerebral deletion levels in thetemporal and frontal lobes. Research hypothesis: HD patients have significantlyhigher mtDNA deletionlevels than agematched controls in the frontal and temporallobes of the cortex. To test the hypothesis, the amount of mtDNA deletion in 22HD patients brains was examined by serial dilution-polymerase chain reaction(PCR) and compared the results with mtDNA deletion levels in 25 aged matchedcontrols. Brain tissues from three cortical regions were taken during an autopsy(from the 22 HD symptomatic HD patients): frontal lobe, temporal lobe andoccipital lobe, and putamen. Molecular analyses were performed on genetic DNAisolated from 200 mg of frozen brain regions as described above. The HDdiagnosis was confirmed in patients by PCR amplification of the trinucleotiderepeat in the IT 15 gene. One group was screened with primers that includ edpolymorphism and the other was screened without the polymorphism. After heatingthe reaction to 94 degrees C for 4 minutes, 27 cycles of 1 minute at 94 degreesCand 2 minutes at 67 degrees C, tests were performed. The PCR products weresettled on 8% polyacrylamide gels. The mtDNA deletion levels were quantitatedrelative to the total mtDNA levels by the dilution-PCR method. When thepercentage of the mtDNA deletion relative to total mtDNA was used as a marker ofmtDNA damage, most regions of the brain accrued a very small amount of mtDNAdamage before age 75. Cortical regions accrued 1 to 2% deletion levels betweenages 80-90, and the putamen accrued up to 12% of this deletion after age 80. Thestudy presented evidence that HD patients have much higher mtDNA deletionlevelsthan agematched controls in the frontal and temporal lobes of the cortex. Temporal lobe mtDNA deletion levels were 11 fold higher in HD patients than incontrols, whereas the frontal lobe deletion levels were fivefold higher in HDpatients than in controls. There was no statistically significant difference inthe average mtDNA deletion levels between HD patients and controls in theoccipital lobe and the putamen. The increase in mtDNA deletion levels found inHD frontal and temporal lobes suggests that HD patients have an increase mtDNAsomatic mutation rate. Could the increased rate be from a direct consequence ofthe expanded trinucleotide repeat of the HD gene, or is it from an indirectconsequence? People talk with a given motive in mind, be it to obtain, impress, or to pass time. However, when people speak, they prepare themselves ahead of time within their mind. They prepare their phrases, predict what the other person would say or how they would respond, and prepare answers or phrases in a way fitting each of the predicted responses the other person could have, all before the speaking even begins. Take the following example into mind: A boy sees a girl who is attractive to him and of course would like to speak to, and perhaps, court her. Through his head run many phrases that he has perhaps heard elsewhere or formulated on his own. The officer who issued licenses for solicitation was authorized to inquire whether the applicant did have a religious cause and to decline a license if in his view the cause was not religious, which gave government officials too much authority over religious questions. Such a censorship of religion as the means of determining its right to survive is a denial of liberty protected by the First Amendment and included in the liberty which is within the protection of the Fourteenth. Laudan's Theory of Scientific Aims I criticize Laudan's constraints on cognitive aims as presented in Science and Values. These constraints are axiological consistency and non-utopianism. I argue that (i) Laudan's prescription for non utopian aims is too restrictive because it excludes ideals and characterizes as irrational or non-rational numerous human contingencies. (ii) We aim to ideals because there is no cogent way to specify in advance what degree of deviation from an ideal is acceptable. Thus, one cannot dispense with ideals. (iii) Laudan does not distinguish difficult from impossible goals, making his injunction against utopianism imprecise. It is "semantically utopian" and, furthermore, a prescription for conservatism and mediocrity. (iv) Goals often contradict each other or are at least partially incompatible. Since Laudan does not say how to prioritize incompatible aims, axiological consistency is an utopian desideratum. Thus, his constraints on cognitive aims contradict one another. Finally, (v), Laudan's axiological constraints are too weak and in order to strengthen them, he must invoke without justification some implicit pre-philosophical cognitive aims. This opens the logical possibility of axiological relativism, which Laudan attempted from the beginning to avoid. Laudan's Theory of Aims In Science and Values, Laudan has developed the view that our scientific aims can sometimes be rationally selected by imposing two constraints (1) on them: 1. they should be jointly consistent, 2. a pragmatic constraint of empirical realizability, or non-utopianism. The A3XX would have more space, be safer, and offer a higher operational margin for the Airlines. And it is especially attractive on longer routes. Moreover, Airbus believed it had solved all of the problems due to the large size of the plane and had begun the necessary procedures for regulatory approvals in the United States and elsewhere. Based on its Airbus’s Global Market Forecast (GMF), the company believes Airline would attempt to increase aircraft size when it was no longer feasible to increase flight frequencies. On the contrary, poor leadership brings about low morale in the team as well as low job performance compared to the situation whereby a good leadership results into a synergetic effect which is lacks when subordinates lack a sense of direction and therefore end up pulling in different directions (Sparrowe, Soetjipto, & Kraimer, 2006).   A job as a law enforcement requires team spirit because of the fact that most missions call for execution by teams. Therefore, a less motivated workforce has implications on rate of crime as well as rise in insecurity.   In an increasingly free market economy, law enforcers who may feel uncomfortable with poor leadership are likely to quit job and join private companies or other government departments of their choice.   There is a need for good leadership inorder to avoid the high officer turnover which is very costly to the government given the high cost of training officers which is usually borne by the government. Poor leadership in the law enforcement department results in poor team spirit and therefore defragmentation.   This is risky especially in this post 9/11 era whereby the police force must remain as intact as possible to avoid infiltration.   Competency, unity and commonness of purpose is what is highly required in the police force.   Several measures can be taken to ensure the above is achieved. Conclusion Such measures include motivation of officers through introduction of incentives such as pay-for-performance, career growth and development opportunities, protection from victimization, provision of an enabling job environment such as modern crime control equipment as well as improving the quality of life of officers through pay increases.   All the above are only possible if the police department is going to embrace good leadership strategies by adopting hybrid leadership methods and perhaps depart from the rigid and conservationist bureaucratic leadership which is highly centralized. They have other purposes, too, but this post confines itself to this role. Despite the ubiquity of quotation marks, some people still err in placement of the closing mark. Generally, a close quotation mark follows rather than precedes a sentence’s terminal punctuation, as in the sentence â€Å"You have nothing to worry about.† (Styles for quotation marks in British English differ from those for American English: Terminal punctuation follows the close quotation mark, and dialogue and quotations are enclosed in pairs of single, not double, quotation marks.) Notice, however, that I wrote â€Å"generally,† and not just because of the British English exception. (As you see here, a comma, like a period, is located inside quotation marks when it follows one or more words thus confined.) What are the exceptions? If the terminal punctuation mark is a question mark or an exclamation mark, and it appears outside the context of the quotation, it should be located outside the quotation mark as well. (In the examples below, which I enclose in double quotation marks because they are themselves excerpts of written documents, the sentences in question are bracketed by single quotation marks the correct style for a quote of a quote.) For example, notice the placement of the question mark in â€Å"Who said, ‘You have nothing to worry about’?† The framing sentence, not the quotation, is an interrogative sentence, so the question mark belongs outside the single quotation marks bracketing the quotation (but inside the double quotation marks, because it is part of my example.) By the same token, in the sentence â€Å"I can’t believe he had the nerve to say, ‘You have nothing to worry about’!† the indignation resides in the context of the framing sentence, not in the recitation of another person’s contentious comment. Notice also that, though a period would ordinarily be located within the quotation followed by the question mark and a comma would usually appear after â€Å"about† in the example with the exclamation point, quotation marks and exclamation points trump and replace periods and commas in such sentence constructions. Punctuation marks are never paired (except in the use of multiple question marks or exclamation points in informal writing, and in the case of a close parenthesis and a period, like the tag team you see right here). That’s not all there is to quotation marks, of course. When companies use certain ways of entertainment as a sales person, they use things that will catch the eyes of the people watching or reading for entertainment. In the USA, we are swamped with what we should look like, act and even live. The companies use the television and ads to show us these things. However, when we are shown these things, it is very difficult to be genuine to ourselves and be original for everyone else. When people are watching their favorite television programs, there will be commercials. These commercials are used by major corporations to sell a product or service. When they do that, they use things that will catch your eyes and want you to use their products or go to them to do something you want them to do. A perfect example of this is the subway commercials. The subway commercials use a skinny man named Jarred to tell them that eating subway made him healthy. We all know that not just eating healthy will make us fit; being active will make us fit. Another example is in clothing ads. In these clothing ads, the companies project the women to be sexual figures. They show off the woman’s breasts and butt. This gives the women a view of how they should look and how they should want to look. This puts in the mind of the women that men will not like them because they don’t look like the women in the ads. This works both ways with the men and the women. The ad s show the men that they have to look like the superheroes that we see in the magazines. When you live in a society where your image is everything, it is easier said than done to maintain an identity that is how you want to be and original to the people around you. The people that can do this and make something of themselves are the people that will be the leaders of America. The people that overcome this challenging act take what society wants them to look and act like and pushes it away. They are the people that do not care what people think of them and what they want them to be. Your personality and your body are yours. The more people want you to look a certain way is the more determination the other people have. The people that triumph over the dilemma that society holds for the people of the USA are the people that build on the wants of everyone else. How do they do this? They ignore what they are supposed to look like and do what they want. The USA needs more people in the world like that. The majority of society is like a woman in a book called â€Å" The Bluest Eye†. The woman’s name was Pocola. She wanted to be beautiful like all the white girls in her world. Come to find out in the end that she goes crazy wanting blue eyes and is insane. This is what our society does and has to be fixed. Being what you want and how you want is completely up to yourself. The more you are how you want to be, the more people will look at how you are. With the media more controlling than ever, the more people have to be what they want.
